When a DDR4 part goes end-of-life, a validated pin-to-pin replacement protects both your design and your margins. Here is a repeatable process.
1. Confirm true pin-to-pin equivalence
Match the package, pinout and signal definitions exactly. Functionally similar is not the same as pin-compatible — check the datasheet pin tables side by side.
2. Match density, rank, speed and timing
Same total density and organization, same rank, and a speed bin and timings the platform already supports. A tighter (lower) CL is generally safe; a looser one may fail to train.
3. Substitute supplier and grade carefully
Keep the temperature grade equal or better. Note the vendor and any firmware/ECC differences that could affect boot behavior.
4. Validate before you commit
Order samples, run memory tests (e.g. MemTest, platform diagnostics) across temperature, and confirm stability under load before mass production.
5. Document the change
Record the cross-reference, test results and a PCN for your quality team and customers.
