AEC-Q100 Explained: What Automotive Grade Really Requires

Automotive grade is shorthand for a component that has passed the AEC-Q100 qualification standard for integrated circuits in vehicles. It is far more than a wider temperature range.

Temperature grades

AEC-Q100 defines grades by operating ambient: Grade 3 (-40 to 85 C), Grade 2 (-40 to 105 C), Grade 1 (-40 to 125 C) and Grade 0 (-40 to 150 C). Pick the grade for the actual mounting location (cabin vs engine bay).

The test families

Qualification spans accelerated stress (HTOL, temperature cycling, ESD, latch-up), package assembly integrity, and electrical characterization across voltage and temperature corners. Passing produces a qualification report you should request and review.

Beyond the chip: PPAP and traceability

Automotive programs also expect PPAP documentation, a controlled process, and full lot traceability. A part being AEC-Q100 qualified does not by itself mean the supplier can deliver the paperwork your OEM requires.

Common misconceptions

An industrial part rated -40 to 85 C is not automotive grade simply because the temperature overlaps — the qualification, defect-rate targets and process controls differ.
